CREATIVE WRITING: EP 2- THE PRINCE

Hey everyone,

This is Rae. This is the 2nd chapter of the story I am currently writing. Hope you all like it!

CHAPTER 2: THE PRINCE

The Ivanovs are an even more ancient bloodline than the Petrovs and that’s saying something. At first, they were really influential and their kingdom was the wealthiest and most prosperous of them all. Gradually, their successors became weaker as more became interested in living a lavish life rather than expanding the kingdom’s territories so their hold on the kingdom weakened and that is when the Petrovs sprang up. They took advantage of their opponent’s weakness and attacked them. The Petrovs returned home victorious with not only a large territory but also the people’s support. That is when the enmity began the two dynasties began. The Ivanovs were jealous of the Petrovs’ authority and vowed revenge against them but till date, they haven’t been able to wage war against them. Anyway, although they are not super powerful, in no way should you undermine them. One thing you need to know about the Ivanovs is that they are extremely crafty. They keep a huge number of spies, scattered all over the kingdom and so they receive a lot of useful information about the Petrovs.

Speaking of the Petrovs, we are yet to deal with our main character- Prince Peter Petrov. It was night in the kingdom of Devon and all was quiet at the royal palace. Only the Prince was restless. Who wouldn’t be, considering it was your birthday the next day and instead of celebrating, you had to go on a hunt to kill a wolf or it would be the end of you? Peter had never complained when he learnt about the Hunt and its conditions. He had learnt to accept his fate from a very young age and knew he could do nothing to change it. He was only eight when he had been made to stop shedding tears or appear like a weak figure in any way. “Be strong. That’s the only thing you can do for the kingdom, son,” his father had told him repeatedly. “One day, all this”- his mother had said, gesturing to the entire kingdom splayed out in front of him from the balcony, “will be yours, Peter. We have enemies, dangerous ones who might appear harmless right now but can attack at any moment. Therefore, it’s important for you to never let your guard down and protect the kingdom. You live for, fight for and die for Devon.”

Those words had been stuck in Peter’s head since then. His parents were not interested in what he wanted to do, it was all for the ultimate good of Devon. Even if he had other dreams, he had to suppress them- his only duty was to the kingdom and he had to do it. That’s pretty tragic, won’t you agree?

Back to the present. It was long past midnight and Peter felt rather drowsy. He needed to go to bed to be ready for the Hunt the next day. He slowly stood up and the light from the lamp nearby fell on his face. In the light of the lamp, his features were prominent. His eyes were set and were deep as obsidian. His aura seemed to glow with confidence and determination. From the outside, he seemed to look like he was ready for anything but if one truly looked inside which no one had ever thought of doing, they would have surely seen that inside he was just a vulnerable, lonely person. He had spent his whole life appearing strong and sturdy and being so serious that he had almost forgotten what it was like to just let go and be carefree for once. However, he was the Prince and everyone looked up to him which meant he had to bury those feelings deep down and concentrate on his next task- the Hunt. This iron determination in him made plenty of people say and I quote, “He’s a good sort of chap. His father and mother have pressurised him too much and made him forget that he’s still young after all. He really missed out on his childhood. Poor boy.” Yeah, poor boy indeed. Everyone in the kingdom believed that Peter would return home victorious with not one, not two but three white wolves slung on his shoulders because of his admirable fighting skills.

Little did they know how wrong their judgement had been. Peter, the mighty Petrov prince, the person who everyone believed would bring prosperity to their kingdom once again was not going to return home with either one, two or three wolves. Whether he returned home at all was the question…

Well, this was the second chapter. I would really love to know how you felt about it so feel free to post your thoughts in the comments below! Stay safe and happy! More later…

Ciao,
